You don’t need to do everything perfectly.
You just need to be present, responsive, and consistent.
Talk. Wait. Connect. Repeat.
Welcome to Parent Corner
At ChatMore Speech & Language Therapy, we believe parents are the most important part of a child’s communication journey. This space was created to give you simple, practical tools you can use at home, without stress, pressure, or extra materials.
Here you’ll find easy strategies, developmental guidance, and ideas you can naturally use during play, meals, reading, and daily routines.
Everyday Speech & Language Tips
-
Join your child in their interests. Talk about what they are already doing instead of directing play.
-
Child: “car” → You: “big car is going fast!”
This helps build longer sentences naturally. -
Give your child time to think and respond. Silence creates space for communication.
-
“Do you want crackers or grapes?” instead of asking open-ended questions.
-
Describe what you are doing during everyday tasks like cooking, bathing, or getting dressed.
-
Even a few minutes a day builds vocabulary, comprehension, and early literacy skills.
-
Gestures, sounds, words, and AAC all count. Every attempt is communication.
Why Everyday Talk Matters
Children learn language best through real-life interaction, not worksheets or drills.
When you:
talk during routines
respond to your child’s communication
model simple language
give wait time
You are building the foundation for speech, language, and social development.
When to Seek Support
You may want a speech-language evaluation if your child:
is hard to understand for their age
has limited vocabulary
struggles to follow directions
is not combining words appropriately
becomes frustrated when trying to communicate
Early support can make a big difference.

What You Can Focus On at Home
Instead of trying to “teach speech,” focus on:
Talking about what is happening
Following your child’s interests
Waiting before repeating or helping
Modeling simple words and phrases
Making communication fun and pressure-free
Small moments repeated daily lead to big progress over time.
